Your Body is a Temple

1 Corinthians 19-20
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Every year around this time I would tell myself in “20XX” I am going to get healthy. I am going to eat right, get more exercise, and spend more time doing the things I love.  I would start off very excited and devoted to the soon to be “new me” only to eventually lose stamina because the excitement wore off.  If this is you I am going to tell you to STOP before jumping in this year.  I found something that is very helpful.  No, it’s not the perfect diet. No, it’s not the quickest exercise routine. What is it?  It’s God’s word.  There are several scriptures in the Bible that tell us our bodies are not our own, they are God’s temples.  You would not neglect God’s temples so why would you neglect your body?  Change is hard so lean into God and ask HIM – what should I focus on this year?

I would like to leave you with this prayer:

Dear God with my body, with my mind, with my heart, and soul I enter into this time with you.

Give me honesty in my mind about what my body is for. Give me gratitude in my heart for all that my body can do.

Give me peace in my soul about all of its perceived limitations. Help me understand what it would look like or feel like to regard my body with wisdom, to use my body with wisdom. I ask for healing in the places that feel broken.

I ask for gratitude for the aspects of my body that allows me to serve you, serve my family, my neighbors, my church. Help me embody a sanctuary by your design, not by my earning or striving.

Thank you for sending me a compassionate powerful teacher, in Jesus who became a living expression of your word, a teacher who knows what it is to be a human, not exactly like me, but kind of like me. God you know what struggles I face, you know what joy awaits me.

Thank you for meeting me in every particularity.
